Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media as well as a public speaker, and Canadian. Feminist Frequency is a website that hosts videos and commentaries analysing portrayals female characters in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian and American feminist media critic. She is the creator and director of executive for Feminist Frequency an educational, non-profit site that examines the representation of women in popular media narratives. Aiming to break down the stereotypes associated with women in pop culture she also is a vocal advocate for issues relating to harassment targeted at women and the other marginalized groups of individuals in the internet world. Sarkeesian holds a Masters in social and political thinking at York University. As a public speaker, she is highly sought after and has been a speaker at TEDxWomenXOXO as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. Since her early years Sarkeesian was captivated with gender issues and feminist thinking. While still at school in 2009 she started her Feminist Frequency website. She had a plan to start an internet-based series on gender representation in games, but was the target of an online campaign to harass her. The attack did have been a hindrance, rather it only strengthened her resolve as a feminist critic of media. As a result of the many contributions she has made to feminist movements, she has been recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award winner for her work as a journalist. She was also the founder and director of Feminist Frequency a nonprofit educational organisation that studies pop culture gender representations.
